The fountain wasn't just for hydrating purposes however, it was also a centre point for fun and games. In the summer months children could be seen splashing and chasing each other around the fountain until they exploded into fits of giggles. So, even back then, water played a prominent part pupils' day to day life, and they were always encouraged to drink.

With most schools stocking either water coolers or fountains in communal areas or in toilet areas, evidence of active and persistent encouragement - from teachers to pupils- to drink more water, was conspicuously absent. This is very worrying, seeing as it is at school where children's attitude to health and relationship with food and water is forged.
