Our skin is made up of different layers which help in preventing it from any kind of damage. Our skin is elastic because it contains proteins called elastin and collagen which are actually elastic fibers. However, even the skin has certain limitations and cannot stretch beyond a point. During pregnancy, the body releases a hormone known as glucocorticoid, due to which the production of these proteins come to a halt. So, the skin expands causing scarring to the underlying skin tissues, thus giving rise to stretch marks.
