Polythene mailing bags are rather cheap, light in weight and convenient for some purposes.
If you become concerned with large-scale mailing, approach the packaging manufacturers, and ask about over-runs of their products or stock clearance bargains. These may be available a reduction costs.

If a small item you are sending through the post has pointed edges or an uneven shape, a padded envelope might be suitable. Cushioning material - like bubble wrap or polystyrene chips - should be used to provide padding, and to split fragile items inside a robust container. The book itself is quite strong, so surrounding it with corrugated cardboard - or employing a padded envelope - should be satisfactory.
